Kumasi, March 23,  – The bustling Asokwa Interchange in Kumasi has been transformed into a vibrant open-air art gallery, as part of activities marking Ashantifest 2026.

What was once a busy traffic hub has now become a colourful showcase of creativity and cultural pride, captivating commuters and residents across the metropolis.

A Canvas of Culture and Creativity

The transformation was led by visual arts students from various Senior High Schools in Kumasi, who used brushes, paint, and imagination to decorate sections of the interchange with striking murals.

Prominent among the artworks are detailed portraits of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and President John Dramani Mahama, symbolising leadership, heritage, and national identity.

The murals, rich in colour and symbolism, highlight not only the technical skill of the students but also their deep appreciation of Ghana’s history and culture.

Public Reaction and Impact

The artistic makeover has drawn widespread admiration, with:

  • Commuters slowing down to admire the paintings
  • Pedestrians pausing to take photos and videos
  • Commercial drivers expressing excitement at the refreshing change

For many, the artworks have turned an ordinary commute into a moment of inspiration and reflection.

Promoting Youth Talent and Urban Beauty

The initiative, spearheaded by Dr Frank Amoakohene, Ashanti Regional Minister, has been praised as an innovative way to:

  • Promote youth creativity and talent
  • Enhance cultural expression
  • Beautify public infrastructure

Members of the public have called for similar projects to be replicated across other parts of Kumasi to further boost the city’s aesthetic appeal and creative economy.

Redefining Public Spaces Through Art

Beyond its visual impact, the project demonstrates how art can transform everyday spaces, fostering unity and pride within communities.

As Ashantifest 2026 continues, the murals at the Asokwa Interchange stand as a powerful reminder that the creativity of young people can redefine urban landscapes and inspire a nation.
