Government pledges to end “No Bed Syndrome” following hit-and-run victim’s death

Accra, Feb. 24, – Grace Ayensu-Danquah has vowed to reform Ghana’s emergency healthcare system and hospital infrastructure to tackle the persistent “no bed syndrome,” after the tragic death of 29-year-old engineer Charles Amissah.

Amissah reportedly suffered a hit-and-run accident and was allegedly turned away by three major hospitals due to unavailable beds.

Addressing Parliament on Tuesday, Madam Ayensu-Danquah stated: “We are retraining our emergency services staff and extending improvements to the ambulance services themselves.”

Her remarks followed a formal statement by Alexander Afenyo-Markin regarding the circumstances of Amissah’s death on Friday, February 6. The hospitals involved were the Police Hospital, Greater Accra Regional Hospital, and Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. Four staff at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital have since been interdicted pending investigations.

The Deputy Health Minister said the government plans to upgrade medical equipment, strengthen ambulance services, and retrain hospital staff nationwide to prevent such avoidable fatalities in the future.
