Fishermen Rescued After Sea Robbery Incident Near Nyanyano

Accra, Feb. 26 – A coordinated military operation has brought to safety dozens of Ghanaian fishermen who were left adrift after suspected sea robbers disabled their boats off the Central Regional coastline.

The rescue mission, undertaken by the Ghana Armed Forces, was launched at first light following distress reports from waters approximately 35 nautical miles offshore between Gomoa Nyanyano and Senya Beraku.

According to a release issued by the military’s public relations directorate, the assailants reportedly stripped the fishermen of their outboard motors and valuables, leaving multiple canoes incapacitated at sea. The affected vessels — Argentina 2, Argentina 3, Sea Lion and Berema Nsukwa — were unable to navigate back to shore without propulsion.

The maritime extraction was led by the Ghana Navy, which deployed high-speed interceptor craft and additional patrol ships from its Eastern and Western Commands. Air surveillance support was provided by the Ghana Air Force, while local fisherfolk assisted with area intelligence and coordination.

In total, 71 individuals were evacuated — 24 conveyed to Tema and 47 assisted ashore at Senya Beraku. Post-rescue debriefings indicated that although property was stolen, no kidnappings were recorded.

Security presence within Ghana’s Exclusive Economic Zone has since been reinforced, with sustained patrols aimed at deterring further maritime crime.

The Armed Forces advised operators along the coast to heighten vigilance and promptly relay unusual maritime movements to authorities. The statement also acknowledged logistical and community support from the area’s Member of Parliament, Gizella Tetteh Agbotui, alongside residents and fishing groups in the enclave.

Military officials reaffirmed their operational mandate to secure national waters, protect livelihoods dependent on the sea, and counter piracy-related threats within Ghana’s jurisdiction.
