Bongo (U/E), Feb. 23, – Mr. Joseph Akasake Abaa, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Bongo, has died after a brief illness.
Family sources indicated that he passed away on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at the Upper East Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga. The exact cause of death has not yet been made public.
Alhaji Tahiru Aberinga, Bongo Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), confirmed the development, describing the news as sudden and deeply distressing to the party and the district.
Mr. Abaa was nominated for the DCE position by President John Dramani Mahama and subsequently endorsed by the Bongo District Assembly in April 2025.
Before his appointment, he represented the people of Zorko-Goo-Awaah as an Assembly Member for three consecutive terms, earning recognition for his grassroots engagement and commitment to local governance.
Within the NDC, he previously served as the Bongo Constituency Youth Organiser and later became the Constituency Secretary in 2022.
In the field of education, the late Mr. Abaa worked as a storekeeper at Sirigu Integrated Senior High School and Zuarungu Senior High School.
His passing is considered a significant loss to the district and the wider Upper East Region.
