Ashaiman, Feb. 23, – The Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA) has outlined an ambitious plan to reconstruct the Ashaiman Main Market into a modern commercial complex aligned with government’s 24-hour economy agenda.
The redevelopment, according to the Assembly, is intended to decongest the trading enclave, enhance sanitation and create an enabling environment for round-the-clock business operations.
Speaking at a stakeholder engagement to present the market’s redevelopment roadmap, Mr. Freeman Tsekpo, the Municipal Chief Executive, said the existing structure no longer met the growing demands of traders and shoppers.
He explained that the proposed design would introduce a more organised layout, incorporating structured sheds and open trading spaces to properly accommodate vendors who currently operate along roadsides and walkways.
Mr. Tsekpo said consultations with traditional authorities and other stakeholders informed adjustments to the plan, including increasing the number of sheds where possible to ensure no trader was left out.
He disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama had directed that the project be executed within 15 to 18 months, with a clear timeline to prevent delays that often plague public infrastructure projects.
The MCE emphasised that funding for the project was secured by government, assuring traders that stall allocation fees would be moderate since the redevelopment was not a private commercial venture.
To prevent disruption of economic activity in the busy municipality, he said construction would be carried out in phases, allowing trading to continue in designated sections while other parts were being developed.
Temporary space, he added, had been arranged on land provided by the African Advance family to accommodate affected traders during the construction period.
Nii Annang Adjor Amui III, Chief of Ashaiman, appealed to traders and residents to cooperate with the Assembly to ensure smooth implementation of the project.
He underscored the importance of unity and dialogue in achieving a market facility that reflects the commercial significance of Ashaiman and supports sustained economic growth.
