KMA steps up community education on reducing salt intake

Kumasi, Dec. 10, – The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), working in collaboration with the Partnership for Healthy Cities, has intensified public sensitisation on the health risks associated with excessive salt consumption.

After a maiden stakeholder engagement held at Adum on November 27, the Assembly has rolled out community sensitisation activities at Amanfrom and Atasemanso, with plans to expand the campaign to churches, social events, and other public forums across the metropolis.

The initiative seeks to promote reduced salt intake among residents and discourage the widespread practice of placing salt in open containers on dining tables in homes and food vending outlets.

During a sensitisation meeting at Atasemanso, community members urged the KMA to consider introducing a by-law to prohibit the open display of salt at restaurants, eateries, and food joints.

Findings from research conducted by the Assembly and its partners revealed that many food establishments within the metropolis openly display salt, a practice health experts warn could increase the risk of conditions such as hypertension, kidney disease, and other related health complications.

Health professionals at the event stressed that although salt is necessary for the body in moderate amounts, excessive consumption poses serious health threats. They cited the World Health Organisation’s guideline, which recommends a daily salt intake of no more than five grams.

The KMA and its partner institutions are therefore appealing to the public to adopt healthier dietary habits and actively support the ongoing salt reduction campaign.

Nana Osei Okuradom, Nkosuohene of Atasemanso, speaking on behalf of the traditional authorities, commended the Assembly and its partners for the initiative and assured them of the community’s full support.
