Accra, March 13, – Umaru
Nafisatu, a member of national female hockey team (the Black Sticks), has said,
the team is poised to win medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast,
Australia.
According to Nafisatu, the team
has prepared adequately and was in high spirit to deliver a gold at the
Commonwealth Games.
Team Ghana left to Gold Coast,
Australia on Monday after a short ceremony in Accra, for pre-game preparations
to acclimatise with the conditions in the host city before the start of the
Games.
This is the last of a three phase
preparations for all the 12 disciplines representing Ghana at the Games.
The first was a non-residential
training, before moving into a residential training camp and then climaxing it
with an intense and familiarisation preparations in Gold Coast three weeks
before the event starts.
Nafisatu, who was adjudged the
2015 Sports Writer Association of Ghana (SWAG) female hockey player of the
year, told the GNA Sports, before the team departed that, the team was happy
with the efforts by the ministry to give them the best preparations.
She said the ministry has shown
so much interest in them, adding that it has given them enough motivation to
give off their best.
The Police Ladies defender added
that, though they were the underdogs in the competition, they have had enough
motivation so far to go for gold and make Ghana proud.
“We know we are going to play
some of the best countries in the competition. It is not going to be easy. We
are the least ranked country (hockey team) in the Commonwealth Games.
“We are ranked 30 and our
competitors are all within the first 20 ranked teams. So this camping is going
to be very good for us because we are going there early and can adapt well,”
she said.
