Brong-Ahafo lost 287 lives through road crashes

Sunyani , Jan. 17, – The Brong-Ahafo Region lost 287 lives through road crashes in 2016, Police superintendent Daniel Oppong Asirifi, the Regional Commander of Motor, Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service, disclosed on Monday.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, he said it was 55 cases higher than the 232 incidents recorded in 2015.

Supt Asirifi said 670 road crashes were recorded in 2016 with 945 people injured, while 868 people also suffered various degrees of injuries in 2015 with 645 cases.

He added that 151 pedestrians were knocked down by vehicles and motor bikes last year as against 187 in 2015.

He expressed concern that the increasing number of road carnage needed a concerted effort in bringing sanity on the roads.

Supt Asirifi therefore urged drivers to apply their driving skills and road safety competence well to help the nation to record zero road crashes at anytime to save lives and property.

He however admitted that road crashes could not be avoided entirely but it could be reduced to the barest minimum if vehicle owners ensured regular maintenance of their vehicles.

Supt Asirifi advised drivers to have enough rest because tiredness had also been identified as a major cause of road crashes.

He noted that every driver was supposed to have at least 30 minutes rest after a continuous four-hour drive to enable all his/her five senses to work actively behind the steering wheel.
