Accra, April 23, – President John Dramani Mahama has held discussions with members of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs at the Presidency in Accra.
The delegation, led by Nene Sakite II, President of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs and Paramount Chief of the Manya Krobo Traditional Area, visited the Presidency to congratulate the President on his election victory in 2024 and assumption of office.
They also used the occasion to express appreciation for development projects initiated in the Eastern Region since the President assumed office last year.
The delegation included Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, Kwahuhene and Vice President of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, and Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, Okyehene.
Other members were Okotwaasuo Kantamanto Owoare Agyekum III, Omanhene of Akyem Bosome; Nana Osei Nyarko III, Boso-Guahene; Daasebre Kwaku Boateng III, Omanhene of New Juaben Traditional Area; Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III, Akuapemhene; and Odeneho Kwafo Akoto III, Akwamuhene.
The rest included Akusiaku Brempong Kumi Sasraku VIII, Anumhene; Oseadeeyo Dr Frimpong Manso IV, Akyem Kotokuhene; Nene Oklepeme Nuer Anobah Sasraku; and the Konor of the Yilo Krobo Traditional Area.
President Mahama assured the chiefs of government’s commitment to balanced national development across all regions.
He also disclosed ongoing efforts to operationalise the University of Engineering and Agricultural Sciences (UEAS) at Bunso in the Eastern Region.
He said government was strengthening macroeconomic stability and restoring investor confidence to support infrastructure-led growth.
“The economy is more resilient and is withstanding external shocks arising from the Middle East conflict. We are reaching important milestones, and we remain focused,” he said.
President Mahama added that job creation remained a major challenge, stressing the need for stronger private sector participation in industrialisation and agriculture.
He explained that the uncapping of the District Assemblies Common Fund would enable MMDAs to invest in projects such as 24-hour economy markets to stimulate local growth.
The President also outlined key social interventions, including the Free Primary Health Care initiative, the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares), and expansion of health infrastructure to improve access to healthcare.
He assured that the Eastern Regional Hospital project would be completed, adding that the contractor had been directed to return to site for continuation of work.
He further indicated that government would soon cut sod for three new hospital projects in the new regions.
Nene Sakite II, speaking on behalf of the delegation, commended the President for ongoing development efforts in the region.
He expressed optimism that continued engagement would strengthen collaboration between government and traditional authorities.
Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Mr Ahmed Ibrahim, and other senior officials were present at the meeting.
