UMaT Develops 34-Acre Arboretum for Botanical Studies

Tarkwa, April 6 – The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa, has developed a 34-acre arboretum within its campus to serve as a botanical garden for practical teaching and research, Vice Chancellor Professor Richard Kwasi Amankwah announced.

  • The facility is intended for hands-on training in upcoming Forestry and Land Reclamation programmes.
  • An arboretum is a living museum or garden dedicated to cultivating and displaying diverse species of trees, shrubs, and woody plants for scientific study, education, and conservation.
  • Prof Amankwah made the announcement during UMaT’s observance of World Water Day 2026, themed “Water and Gender.”

He highlighted that upon assuming office five years ago, he introduced initiatives aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), prioritising nine of the 17 goals, including:

  • No poverty
  • Gender equality
  • Quality education
  • Clean water and sanitation
  • Climate action
  • Life on land
  • Partnerships
  • Affordable and clean energy
  • Industry, innovation, and infrastructure
  • The University also aligns global observance days with these SDGs, such as World Water Day, World Day for Safety and Health at Work, International Women’s Day, World Environment Day, and World Engineering Day, fostering collaboration with industry and communities.

Prof Amankwah thanked AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine, Gold Fields Ghana Limited, Ghana Manganese Company, traditional authorities, and security agencies for their continuous support.
