Accra, April 1, – The University Hospital at the University of Ghana has issued a call for support from individuals, corporate bodies, and community organisations to procure new beds and improve patient care, comfort, and safety.
A statement from the Health Services Directorate said the hospital, with a current bed capacity of 167, faces mounting pressure due to a rapidly growing patient population. As a quasi-governmental institution, it depends mainly on internally generated funds and limited government subventions, which are insufficient to meet infrastructure and equipment needs.
Many of the existing beds have been in use for several years, making them worn out, outdated, and unfit for purpose, compromising patient comfort, infection control, and overall healthcare efficiency.
“To address this challenge, the hospital seeks support to procure 167 manual hospital beds, including 42 one-crank beds (GHS 2,700 each), 44 two-crank beds (GHS 3,500 each), and 81 three-crank beds (GHS 7,800 each),” the statement said.
The beds are vital for safe patient positioning and effective nursing care, and their replacement is expected to enhance patient dignity, recovery, and clinical outcomes.
Donors can sponsor one or more beds through direct deposits, transfers to the University Hospital account at Ecobank, Legon Branch, or by cheque payable to University Health Services. Payments may also be arranged directly with the approved supplier, who will deliver the beds to the facility.
The statement assured transparency and accountability, promising that all contributions would be formally acknowledged, with public recognition in official communications unless donors choose to remain anonymous.
“By acting today, whether by sponsoring a bed or sharing this appeal, you can make an immediate and lasting impact on patient care,” the statement concluded.
