Three Ghanaian para-athletes book place at 2026 Commonwealth Games

Accra, April 21, – Ghana’s para-athletics team has secured three qualification slots for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, in a major boost to the country’s para-sports development.

According to a statement signed by Dr Henry Larbi, General Secretary of the National Paralympic Committee (NPC)-Ghana and copied to the press, the qualification was achieved through direct ranking placements and a bipartite allocation system.

Athlete Hayford Addai secured automatic qualification in the Men’s 100m T47 after recording a time of 11.09 seconds, ranking sixth on the Commonwealth standings.

Zinabu Issah also booked her place after finishing fourth in the Women’s Shot Put F57 with a throw of 8.66 metres.

Experienced para-athlete Bostyo Nkegbe completed the trio after earning qualification through a bipartite invitation, making him a three-time Paralympian.

The achievement raises Ghana’s para-sport quota for the 2026 Commonwealth Games to five, following earlier qualifications in para swimming and para powerlifting.

The NPC-Ghana, in collaboration with the Ghana Olympic Committee, said preparations will be intensified through participation in International Paralympic Committee (IPC) competitions and other elite events to improve performance ahead of the Games.

NPC-Ghana President, Mr Samson Deen, described the qualification as a proud milestone for the country.

He said the success reflects the commitment of athletes, coaches, and support teams, and expressed appreciation to the Ghana Olympic Committee for its support.

Mr Deen also appealed to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and other stakeholders to provide enhanced support, including training facilities and international exposure, to improve Ghana’s medal prospects.
