Tetegu Taxi Driver Killing Case Adjourned as Accused Policewoman Fails to Appear

Accra, March 25, – The Adabraka District Court has adjourned to April 16, 2026, the case involving Gifty Oppong, a police officer accused of fatally shooting a taxi driver at Tetegu, after she failed to appear in court.

Prosecution told the court that the accused was in lawful custody but was not brought before it, necessitating a fresh date.

Defence counsel, Mr Raymond Felli, criticised the development, describing it as unfortunate and a waste of time, since no proceedings could take place despite his presence. He prayed the court to award costs.

Family members of the deceased, who travelled from various locations, also expressed disappointment over the adjournment and the slow pace of the case.

Oppong is accused of shooting Edward Awuku Owusu, popularly known as Papa Kwesi, during a confrontation on January 19, 2026, at Tetegu near Weija.

She has been charged with murder and remanded into custody. Her plea has not yet been taken.

Police said the victim was pronounced dead on arrival at the Police Hospital, while the accused sustained injuries after reportedly being hit by a vehicle while attempting to flee.

Exhibits recovered included a live 9mm round, a magazine, and a spent cartridge.
