SHS Feeding Crisis Averted as GETFund Releases GH¢199m to Clear Arrears

Accra, April 22, – The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has paid GH¢199.47 million to settle outstanding food supply debts under the Free Senior High School (SHS) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes.

The payment covers arrears accumulated between October 2025 and February 2026, targeting perishable food supplies to sustain feeding programmes in second-cycle institutions nationwide.

According to a statement, the release is intended to prevent disruptions in school operations and ensure steady delivery of meals to students.

It said the intervention underscores government’s commitment to honouring obligations owed to suppliers supporting the FSHS and TVET feeding system.

The disbursement followed an emergency engagement between the Education Minister, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, GETFund officials, and the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), who had warned of possible shutdowns over delayed payments.

The arrears largely covered items such as vegetables, meat, and eggs, which had been affected by funding constraints.

The statement added that the payment comes at a crucial time ahead of the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), scheduled for June.

Government has earmarked GH¢1.788 billion for school feeding and GH¢3.5 billion for the Free SHS programme in the 2025 budget to ensure continuity of operations.
