Services Cost Soars Despite Falling Inflation – GSS

Accra, April 1, 2026 – The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has reported that while overall inflation in Ghana continues to ease, prices for services are rising, putting pressure on households despite cheaper goods.

Headline inflation fell to 3.2 per cent in March 2026, marking the 15th consecutive month of decline from 22.4 per cent in March 2025. Prices of goods, which make up 73 per cent of household spending, declined to 1.7 per cent. However, services inflation surged to 7.2 per cent, nearly double the February rate of 3.7 per cent.

Dr Alhassan Iddrisu, Government Statistician, noted that higher costs in education, rent, and utilities were the main contributors. Services accounted for 25.3 per cent of year-over-year inflation, with housing and utilities alone responsible for 40.6 per cent of the total. Education costs rose 8.1 per cent, largely driven by the private sector.

“Services are becoming more expensive even as goods prices decline,” Dr Iddrisu said, highlighting that inflation was concentrated in critical areas affecting daily life. He advised households to monitor spending closely, reduce non-essential expenses, and build savings buffers to enhance financial resilience.

He also called on businesses to improve operational efficiency and strengthen local supply chains so that savings from lower goods inflation are passed on to consumers rather than absorbed as profit margins.

The GSS reaffirmed its commitment to providing timely, accurate, and relevant data to support evidence-based decisions and national development.
