Accra, April 11, – The Ghana Police Service has arrested a Nigerian woman who appeared in viral videos wearing official police camouflage and standard black uniforms without authorisation.
The suspect, identified as Esther Obasi, was apprehended following investigations by the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team (CVET), which intercepted the videos circulating on social media.
The footage, which showed the suspect dressed in official Ghana Police Service uniforms, sparked public outrage and raised concerns about impersonation and the unauthorised use of police attire.
A police brief issued in Accra stated that investigations traced the suspect to the Prestea area in the Western Region, where she was subsequently arrested.
According to the brief, the police officer whose uniform was used in the videos has also been identified and will be subjected to internal disciplinary procedures.
The statement indicated that the suspect is currently in police custody assisting with investigations and will be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction.
“The Ghana Police Service would like to use this opportunity to warn the public against the unauthorised use and abuse of police uniforms, as persons found culpable will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” the brief said.
The Police reiterated their commitment to maintaining the integrity of the Service and urged the public to report any incidents involving impersonation or misuse of security uniforms.
