One dead, three arrested in Akropong chieftaincy dispute operation

Accra, April 10,  – A police operation linked to the Akwapim-Akropong chieftaincy dispute has ended in the death of one armed suspect and the arrest of three others following a late-night engagement at Akropong in the Eastern Region.

The deceased, identified as Kwasi Ansah Eku, also known as “Dragon,” was reportedly involved in violent disturbances captured in videos circulating after the Awukudae celebration on April 8, 2026. His body has been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for autopsy and preservation.

According to a police brief, officers from the Eastern Regional Police Intelligence Directorate, supported by the National Headquarters, moved to a residence on Akuffo Road at about 0030 hours on April 10 to effect arrests.

The operation, officials said, was aimed at apprehending individuals identified in the footage of the disturbances linked to the chieftaincy conflict.

Police stated that upon arrival, officers announced their presence and ordered occupants to surrender, but the suspect allegedly opened fire, triggering an exchange of gunfire that lasted about two hours.

The brief indicated that Kwasi Ansah Eku was shot during the exchange. A pump-action gun, along with spent cartridges and live ammunition, was retrieved from the scene.

Two other suspects, Bright Ofori Asante (also known as Bonto), aged 33, and Kwame Ayeh (also known as Saboba), aged 41, were arrested for their alleged involvement in the disturbances captured on video.

A third suspect, Elvis Adjei, aged 19, was also arrested for allegedly obstructing police officers during the operation.

The three are currently being held and have been transferred to Koforidua for further investigations.
