NPP Criticises Mahama’s Administration Over Cocoa and Cashew Farmers

Sunyani, April 6 – The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has described the John Mahama-led government as “deceptive” and unfriendly to cocoa and cashew farmers.

  • Mr Kofi Ofosu Boateng, Bono Regional Secretary of the NPP, expressed concerns over the government’s failure to pay cocoa farmers, despite campaign promises in Election 2024 to improve their livelihoods.
  • Speaking on the one-year performance of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, Mr Boateng called the economic conditions of cocoa farmers “worrying” and criticised the NDC for making “juicy and unrealistic” promises during the campaign.

On the cashew sector:

  • Mr Boateng highlighted an unprecedented decline in cashew prices, which threatens jobs and is forcing farmers out of the business.
  • He urged the government to expedite payments to cocoa farmers and revive the cashew sector to improve farmers’ welfare.

Political implications:

  • The NPP is reportedly re-strategising for the 2028 elections, learning lessons from the current situation.
  • Mr Boateng stated that President Mahama “hasn’t done anything exceptional to deserve commendation” during the first year in office.
