Accra, April 12, – The McDan Foundation has distributed assorted items to about 5,000 widows in Accra as part of its annual Easter support initiative aimed at improving the welfare of vulnerable groups.
The items donated included bags of rice, cooking oil, clothing, beverages, and cash. The event, held at the McDan La Town Park, brought together beneficiaries and dignitaries from various backgrounds.
Dubbed “McDan Time with the Widows,” the initiative forms part of the Foundation’s ongoing efforts to support widows and elderly women across the country.
Mr Daniel McKorley, Chairman of the McDan Group of Companies, said the Foundation remained committed to putting smiles on the faces of widows and enhancing their well-being.
“God listens to widows, and as a society, we must also show them love, care and support,” he told the Ghana News Agency.
He acknowledged the challenges many widows face following the loss of their spouses and emphasised the need for sustained societal support. Mr McKorley noted that the initiative had become an annual tradition of sharing with the less privileged during festive periods and encouraged individuals and organisations to extend similar gestures to vulnerable groups.
He disclosed that the Foundation had supported thousands of widows in previous years, including more than 7,000 beneficiaries last year, adding that the impact of the programme continued to grow. He also pledged to expand the initiative to other parts of the country.
Free Medical Screening
As part of the ceremony, beneficiaries received free medical screening and healthcare services provided by medical personnel from the 37 Military Hospital, a medical wing of the Ghana Armed Forces.
The medical team, comprising more than 40 health professionals, including 11 specialists, offered services in dental care, eye care, ear, nose and throat (ENT) treatment, and screening for various health conditions. Beneficiaries were also served breakfast prior to the distribution of the items.
International Support
Mr McKorley expressed gratitude to the Foundation’s Ukrainian-based partner, the RIDNE Food Consortium, and other supporters for their contributions to the success of the initiative.
Among the dignitaries present were Mr Denys Bashlyk, Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine; Mr Oleksiy Pinchuk, Director of Rural Development at the Ministry; Mr Ivan Lukachuk, Head of the Ukrainian Mission in Ghana; and Mr Oleksii Khvorostianyi, Chief Executive Officer of the RIDNE Food Consortium.
Beneficiaries’ Appreciation
Some beneficiaries expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Foundation, describing the gesture as timely and impactful. They noted that the support would significantly ease their financial burdens and improve their living conditions.
The initiative underscores the importance of public-private partnerships and community-driven interventions in addressing the needs of vulnerable populations.
