Maphlix Farms to Inject 3,000 Tonnes of Tomatoes to Ease National Shortage

Accra, April 8, – Maphlix Farms at Dawhenya in the Greater Accra Region is set to supply 3,000 tonnes of tomatoes to the domestic market as part of efforts to bridge Ghana’s production deficit.

The intervention is expected to help stabilise supply levels following recent constraints on imports from neighbouring countries and ease pressure on the local market.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Sector Minister Mr Eric Opoku made the disclosure during a working visit to the facility, where he inspected production activities and engaged management on strategies to scale up output.

The Ministry indicated that the farm is projected to hit the 3,000-tonne target by the end of the year, supported by expanded open-field cultivation in addition to existing greenhouse operations.

It added that harvesting has already commenced, with produce being picked every three days to ensure continuous supply to the market.

The combined use of greenhouse technology and open-field farming, the statement noted, is expected to support year-round production and reduce seasonal shortages that often trigger price volatility.

The Ministry further revealed that it is collaborating with research institutions, including the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), to improve seed varieties and develop climate-resilient strains with better yield and longer shelf life.

These interventions, it said, are aimed at addressing concerns from traders and consumers regarding the quality and durability of locally produced tomatoes.

The statement stressed that increased private sector involvement, such as the operations of Maphlix Farms, remains key to closing the supply gap and reducing Ghana’s dependence on imported tomatoes.

It assured the public that government continues to implement measures to boost local production and urged traders and consumers to remain calm as the interventions take effect.

The Ministry also noted that Maphlix Farms plans to expand its production capacity further and explore processing opportunities to reduce post-harvest losses and enhance value addition within the tomato value chain.
