Accra, April 7, – Asante Kotoko’s pursuit of the Ghana Premier League title suffered a major setback after a 2-1 home defeat to FC Samartex 1996 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in their Week 28 clash.
The match, which was halted on Sunday due to heavy rains, resumed on Monday morning with Samartex capitalising on the conditions to deliver a decisive second-half performance. Goals from Christian Boateng and Emmanuel Mamah stunned the Porcupine Warriors, while Albert Amoah’s late strike proved insufficient to salvage a result.
The defeat leaves Kotoko fourth on the table with 43 points, trailing leaders Bibiani Gold Stars by eight points as the title race intensifies.
Gold Stars strengthened their grip at the summit with a 2-1 victory over Nations FC at Dun’s Park. Samuel Atta Kumi gave the hosts an early advantage before Razak Simpson levelled from the spot. An own goal by Asante Boahen, however, restored Gold Stars’ lead and sealed all three points.
The Miners now sit one point clear of Medeama with six matches to end the season, tightening competition at the top.
Hearts of Oak also maintained their push with a narrow 1-0 win against Young Apostles at the Accra Sports Stadium. Frank Abora Duku’s first-half effort proved decisive, lifting the Phobians to third place and keeping them within touching distance of the leaders.
Basake Holy Stars extended their impressive home form with a 1-0 victory over Karela United, courtesy of Bismark Teye’s second-half goal, marking their 10th successive home win and moving them into seventh position.
In the Bono derby, Berekum Chelsea secured a vital 1-0 win over Aduana FC, with Emmanuel Ofosu finding the net to boost Chelsea’s survival hopes while denting Aduana’s ambitions.
Heart of Lions recorded a comfortable 2-0 triumph over Vision FC with early goals from Kelvin Asenso and Michael Ephson, while Swedru All Blacks left it late to edge Dreams FC through Zayat Bubakari’s decisive strike.
With six matches remaining, the battle for the title and survival continues to gather momentum, as Gold Stars lead the charge while several clubs fight to avoid the drop.
