Accra, April 9, – Five individuals are in police custody following their alleged involvement in an armed robbery attack on two Chinese nationals at a spare parts shop in Asankragwa in the Western North Region.
The suspects include Issaku Ibrahim (42), Fatau Ali (25), Yahaya Mumuni (26), and Emmanuel Antwi (22), who were arrested on March 12, 2026, shortly after the incident while attempting to escape.
A fifth suspect, whose identity was initially withheld, was later arrested on April 8, 2026, after being apprehended by community members and handed over to the Asankragwa District Police Command.
According to a Police brief, the victims—Chen Zchao and his younger brother Yao Chan—reported that six armed men stormed their shop at Malta, Asankragwa on March 12, 2026, at about 1830 hours.
The attackers were said to be armed with two pump-action guns and cutlasses, and made away with three mobile phones and GH¢200,000 before fleeing in a black Toyota Voxy vehicle towards Sefwi Bekwai.
The robbery was reported to police at about 1920 hours, triggering an immediate response and coordinated pursuit operation.
Personnel from the Asankragwa Night Patrol, working with officers at the Sumpre Police Checkpoint, tracked the suspects and intercepted the getaway vehicle—registered GS 756-25—around 2000 hours the same day.
A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of GH¢198,200, an iPhone 13, a Nokia C300, and a Villoan mobile phone.
Police also retrieved two pump-action guns loaded with 14 AA cartridges, a Bruni Mod 84 cal. 9 PAK pistol loaded with eight rounds, a machete, an amulet, and two CCTV decoders.
Investigators say the suspects, during interrogation, admitted to travelling from Obuasi to carry out the robbery operation.
Caution statements have since been taken, and all retrieved exhibits have been secured for evidential purposes.
All five suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue.
