Lashibi, April 14, – The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will replace more than 2,000 distribution transformers nationwide to improve the reliability of power supply, Mr John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, has announced.
He described the exercise as a major investment aimed at strengthening the country’s electricity distribution network.
“This is a massive intervention. ECG intends to change over 2,000 distribution transformers, something that has never happened in the history of this country,” he said.
Mr Jinapor disclosed this during a working visit to the Lashibi substations, where he inspected ongoing upgrade works and received technical briefings from engineers.
He explained that the initiative formed part of a broader strategy to modernise infrastructure, reduce system overloads, and improve voltage stability across the network.
According to him, a comprehensive assessment conducted after he assumed office revealed that ageing equipment, years of underinvestment, and overstretched systems had weakened power distribution.
He noted that some transformers had been in operation for more than 20 years, contributing to inefficiencies and frequent localised outages despite adequate electricity generation.
Mr Jinapor said although ECG spent over GH¢9 billion in 2024, about GH¢1.8 billion had been earmarked for 2025, with priority given to critical infrastructure such as transformers, conductors, and meters.
He added that the focus had shifted towards targeted investments that directly improved service delivery and grid stability.
The Minister commended ECG for introducing a double supply system in parts of the network, which allowed customers to be switched to alternative lines during faults, thereby minimising outages.
He said the ongoing replacement exercise, which began in Accra, would extend to Kumasi in May and subsequently to other regions.
Mr Jinapor also noted that the Volta Region was developing a programme to strengthen its network and address longstanding supply challenges.
He urged the public to be patient with temporary disruptions during the upgrade works, assuring that the long-term outcome would be more stable and reliable electricity supply.
