Kumasi, April 2, – A violent confrontation linked to a protracted land dispute at Akwatialine, a suburb of Kumasi, has left one person dead and several others injured after a shooting incident on Wednesday.
The incident has heightened concerns over the management of disputed lands, particularly cases still pending before the courts.
Baba Sule Karim, an opinion leader in the area, said that a private developer, who claimed ownership of the land under litigation, arrived at the site with police personnel and began demolishing structures.
He alleged that the developer’s team pulled down buildings and restricted access to sections of the community without prior notice to residents.
Eyewitnesses said the unexpected demolition sparked panic, forcing many residents to flee their homes, leaving behind personal belongings. Some structures, including makeshift shelters and fences, were destroyed during the exercise.
Although some residents admitted they were not the rightful owners of the land, they argued that with the matter still before the courts, no party had the legal authority to undertake such action.
They further maintained that even in cases where demolition was required, due process, including adequate notice, must be followed to prevent violence and safeguard lives.
Residents said earlier engagements had created the expectation that the dispute would be resolved through legal channels rather than force.
They have appealed to government and relevant authorities to intervene, ensure adherence to judicial processes, and provide support for affected families, noting that the incident had disrupted livelihoods and children’s education.
Meanwhile, the Manhyia District Police Command has restored calm in the area and confirmed the arrest of one suspect in connection with the incident.
Police said investigations were ongoing to identify other persons involved and to determine whether proper procedures were followed during the demolition exercise.
They assured the public of a thorough and transparent investigation to ensure justice for all parties.
