Court grants bail to okada rider over alleged ECG transformer vandalism

Accra, April 13, – The Suhum Kraboa Coaltar District Court has granted bail to a 20-year-old okada rider, Evans Adanu, who is standing trial for allegedly vandalising an Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) transformer.

The accused pleaded not guilty to four charges, including conspiracy to interfere with ECG’s distribution system, interference with a public utility distribution system, attempted stealing, and causing unlawful damage.

He was admitted to bail in the sum of GH¢50,000 with two sureties, one of whom is to be justified.
The prosecution told the court that on March 10, 2026, ECG received information that a 100kV pole-mounted transformer serving the Otoase community had been pushed down, resulting in a power outage.

According to Inspector Joseph Oteng, ECG technicians who visited the scene confirmed that the transformer had been deliberately dislodged from its pole.

He said the following day, a resident of Otoase-Owusuakuraa, while on night patrol, heard unusual noises near the scene of the incident.

The resident reportedly fired warning shots, causing four young men to flee into a nearby bush.
With the assistance of other residents, the complainant pursued and arrested the accused, while the other suspects escaped.

The court heard that the accused failed to give a satisfactory explanation for his presence at the scene and was handed over to police at Coaltar.

During investigations, he allegedly admitted to acting with three accomplices to remove and push down the transformer.

Police said efforts were underway to arrest the other suspects.

Meanwhile, the General Manager of ECG Accra West Region commended residents of the area for assisting in the arrest and expressed concern about increasing cases of vandalism targeting electricity infrastructure.

He warned that such acts disrupt power supply and cause significant financial losses to the utility.
The case has been adjourned to April 28, 2026.
