Accra, March 26, – An appeal has been filed by Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, challenging a High Court ruling that dismissed his submission of no case and ordered him to open his defence.
The appeal is accompanied by a motion seeking a stay of proceedings until the interlocutory appeal is determined.
The High Court had earlier ruled that Boasiako, together with his company Akonta Mining Limited and its former Operations Manager, Kwame Antwi, must open their defence to allegations that they carried out mining activities in a forest concession at Samreboi in the Western Region.
At the court sitting on Thursday, counsel for Boasiako, Mr Andy Appiah-Kubi, told the court that the Registrar had fixed April 16, 2026, to hear the application for stay of proceedings.
Responding, Dr Justice Srem-Sai, Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, confirmed that the State had been served with the application. He said the prosecution would not oppose the stay of proceedings but would address the court on legal issues and requested an abridgement of time for the hearing.
Presiding judge, Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay, subsequently adjourned the case to April 2, 2026.
Boasiako, who is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, has denied the charges and remains on bail.
