UN denounces attack on Ghanaian peacekeepers in Lebanon

Accra, March 10,  – The United Nations has strongly condemned a missile attack that injured Ghanaian peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon.

The incident occurred on March 6 amid heavy exchanges of fire at Al Qawzah in southwestern Lebanon, where the Ghanaian contingent was deployed.

In a statement issued by the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, the organisation said three Ghanaian peacekeepers were wounded while inside their position during the attack.

The Secretary-General condemned the assault and extended wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured personnel, stressing that United Nations staff and facilities must always be protected.

“The inviolability of United Nations installations must be respected by all, and those responsible must be held accountable,” the statement said.

The UN also urged all parties involved in the conflict to exercise restraint and comply with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah and provides the framework for maintaining calm along the Israel-Lebanon border.

Earlier, the Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that four of its personnel deployed under UNIFIL were injured when the Ghanaian battalion headquarters in southern Lebanon came under missile attack.

According to the military, three soldiers sustained minor injuries while one was critically wounded but has since undergone surgery and is responding to treatment. All injured personnel are reported to be in stable condition.

The attack also destroyed accommodation facilities belonging to 14 officers, although the affected personnel have since been re-equipped and relocated.

Despite the incident, the Ghana Armed Forces said the troops remained committed to their peacekeeping duties and morale within the battalion remained high.

Ghana is among the long-standing troop-contributing countries to the UNIFIL mission, which was established in 1978 to monitor hostilities and support stability along the Israel-Lebanon border.
