Sunyani Nurse Advises Reduced Sugar and Salt Intake During Health Screening Exercise

Sunyani (Bono), March 25, – Madam Esther Ndamanie, Senior Public Health Nurse and Midwife at the Sunyani Municipal Health Directorate, has urged residents to cut down on sugar and salt consumption as a step towards healthier, longer lives.

Speaking on the sidelines of a free health screening exercise in Sunyani, she highlighted the rising prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, and related chronic conditions, stressing that many cases stem from poor adherence to health guidance.

“Regular exercise, avoiding late meals, and being mindful of what we eat can significantly reduce health risks,” Madam Ndamanie advised, adding that the public should limit junk and fatty foods.

The exercise, organised jointly by the Sunyani St. Anselm’s Anglican Child and Youth Development Center (CYDC) and the Sunyani Municipal Health Directorate, provided beneficiaries—mostly women—with checks for diabetes, hypertension, and Body Mass Index (BMI) assessments.

Madam Ndamanie expressed concern over a rising number of diabetes and hypertension cases, even among minors, noting that adopting better eating habits could help manage these conditions.

Mr. Duodu Bimpong, Director of St. Anselm’s CYDC, said the Centre currently accommodates 260 inmates and hosts annual events during Ghana Month to educate participants about the country’s rich cultural heritage.

As part of the Ghana Month celebrations, inmates donned traditional Kente attire and beads, performing cultural displays, poetry recitals, drumming, and dancing.
