President Mahama Hosts 2026 Presidential Iftar Dinner for Muslim Leaders

Accra, March 17, – President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday hosted the 2026 Presidential Iftar dinner for Muslim leaders at the Presidency in Accra, marking an occasion of unity and reflection during the holy month of Ramadan.

Iftar is the evening meal that breaks the daily fast observed by Muslims during Ramadan.

The event was attended by Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, National Chief Imam Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, senior Islamic clerics, Christian leaders, ministers, Members of Parliament, government officials, and members of the diplomatic corps.

In his remarks, President Mahama commended religious leaders for their role in promoting peace and national cohesion.

“I wish to particularly acknowledge the leadership of the National Chief Imam and the Islamic clergy, whose wisdom and guidance continue to strengthen peace and unity in our nation,” he said.

He described Ramadan as a period of spiritual renewal, discipline, humility, and reflection, noting that fasting fosters empathy, patience, and concern for the vulnerable.

President Mahama highlighted the contributions of Ghana’s Muslim community to national development, citing their engagement in scholarships, trade, public service, and community leadership.

“Allah created mankind of different tribes and faiths, not to fight each other, but to understand and respect one another. Ghana exemplifies this principle,” he said, stressing the harmony between Christians and Muslims.

He further linked the moral values of Ramadan, including restraint, honesty, and accountability, to principles of good leadership and public service. Citing Quran 16:90, he underscored that Allah commands justice, excellence, and generosity, while forbidding immorality and oppression.

President Mahama also praised the charitable acts of Islamic organizations and individuals across Ghana, noting that such generosity reflects the true spirit of Ramadan and strengthens communities.

Amid global unrest, particularly in the Middle East, he urged for prayers for peace, saying:

“We pray that Allah will touch the hearts of all involved in conflicts and bring peace to the people affected.”

Concluding, he reaffirmed that unity, solidarity, and faith would guide Ghanaians as they work together to advance the nation’s development.
