Police Intervene to Prevent Clash Over Illegal Mining in Assin North

Assin Larteh (C/R), March 4, 2026 – The Central North Police Command has intervened to prevent a possible violent clash between youth from four communities and suspected illegal miners operating in parts of the Assin North District.

The affected communities are Assin Larteh, Nyameyedru, Praho and Tetre-Nkwanta.

The situation was brought under control after the District Police Commander, Abraham Acquaye, engaged the agitated youth who had blocked the main road leading to Assin Larteh.

The demonstrators used sticks, clubs and wooden benches to obstruct traffic, protesting what they described as the continued destruction of their environment by illegal mining activities.

DCOP Acquaye said the police command received information about the blockade and swiftly moved in to prevent any confrontation between the residents and the miners.

He noted that statements had since been taken from leaders of the aggrieved parties to support ongoing investigations.

Some residents said illegal mining operations had polluted water bodies, damaged farmlands and threatened their livelihoods.

According to them, the protest followed repeated appeals to authorities which they claimed had not yielded the desired response.

As part of efforts to maintain order, the police also visited sections of the Pra River, where they encountered miners operating in the middle of the water body.

Police officers fired warning shots to disperse the miners and halted their activities while further investigations continued.
