PATH, Ghana Kidney Association call for early screening on World Kidney Day

Kumasi, March 12, – Health experts have renewed calls for increased public awareness and early screening for kidney disease as PATH and the Ghana Kidney Association joined global partners to commemorate World Kidney Day with outreach and public education programmes in Accra and Kumasi.

The annual event, observed on the second Thursday of March, is being marked this year under the theme “Kidney Health for All: Caring for People, Protecting the Planet.”

The theme underscores the link between human health and environmental sustainability while encouraging early detection and prevention of kidney-related diseases.

Health experts noted that chronic kidney disease (CKD) remains a major global health challenge, affecting an estimated 850 million people worldwide. If not detected early and properly managed, the disease can progress to kidney failure, resulting in severe complications and premature death.

In Ghana, CKD is increasingly becoming a significant public health concern, with an estimated prevalence rate of 13.3 per cent. However, awareness of the condition remains low—about six per cent among the general population and around 10 per cent among high-risk groups.

To help address the problem, the Healthy Heart Africa Programme, an initiative of AstraZeneca implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Health and PATH, is promoting routine kidney screening and early detection as part of efforts to reduce the burden of CKD and other non-communicable diseases in the country.
