Parliament Approves Ghana Deposit Protection Amendment Bill, 2025

Accra, March 18, – Parliament has passed the Ghana Deposit Protection (Amendment) Bill, 2025, a measure aimed at safeguarding depositors’ funds and reinforcing public confidence in the financial sector.

The legislation comes after the financial sector clean-up, during which the government spent over GH¢21 billion between 2017 and 2020 to reimburse depositors affected by the collapse of banks and other financial institutions.

The amendment updates the Ghana Deposit Protection Act, 2016 (Act 931), granting the Ghana Deposit Protection Corporation (GDPC) the authority to insure depositors’ funds and provide emergency funding when needed. The move is expected to enhance financial inclusion, strengthen stability, and protect the savings of ordinary Ghanaians.

Mr Thomas Nyarko Ampem, Deputy Minister of Finance, said the revised framework would expand the mandate of the GDPC, ensuring a stronger financial backstop and improving the resilience of the banking system.

He added that the amendment would reinforce accountability and trust in financial institutions while guaranteeing that depositors remain protected in the event of future bank failures.

The passage of the bill represents another milestone in the government’s ongoing reforms to consolidate the financial sector and mitigate systemic risks.
