Bolgatanga, March 20, – The Upper East Regional Minister, Mr Donatus Atanga Akamugri, has raised serious concerns about the increasing cases of prostitution and substance abuse in Bolgatanga.
He warned that the growing trend, particularly among the youth, posed a grave risk to their future and overall community wellbeing.
Addressing congregants during the Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations in Bolgatanga on Friday, the Minister said the occasion, though festive, also offered an opportunity to reflect on pressing social issues affecting the region.
According to him, the rise in commercial sex activities and drug use signalled a worrying decline in societal values, which required urgent attention.
“As we mark this important occasion, we must not lose sight of the challenges within our communities, especially the increasing levels of prostitution and substance abuse among the youth,” he stated.
Mr Akamugri called for a coordinated response involving security agencies, religious authorities, traditional leaders, and residents to address the situation before it worsened.
He urged law enforcement bodies to strengthen monitoring and enforcement efforts, while appealing to community leaders to actively engage and guide young people towards responsible behaviour.
The Minister cautioned that failure to act decisively could weaken the social fabric of the region and hinder development progress.
He also highlighted the importance of staying alert to broader threats such as violent extremism and other criminal activities, stressing the need for continued vigilance and cooperation among citizens.
Mr Akamugri encouraged young people to remain focused, disciplined, and law-abiding, and to pursue productive ventures that would contribute meaningfully to the growth of the region.
He further appealed to the public to uphold the values of peace, unity, and compassion promoted during Ramadan, and to extend support to vulnerable groups in society.
Meanwhile, the Upper East Regional Chief Imam, Sheikh Yussif Imam Umar, offered prayers for national peace and urged citizens to support development initiatives aimed at improving the lives of the less privileged.
