Mahama calls on Ghanaians to prioritise national interest at Independence celebration

Accra, March 6, — President John Dramani Mahama has urged citizens to put the interest of Ghana ahead of partisan, ethnic and personal considerations as the country marked its 69th Independence Anniversary.

Delivering his address at the national Independence Day parade held at the forecourt of Jubilee House, the President said unity and patriotism were essential for sustaining the country’s progress.

He stressed that national development required a collective commitment to prioritise the welfare of the state above individual ambitions.

“Ghana must come before party, tribe and personal interests. Our nation is greater than any single individual,” he said.

The ceremony was organised under the theme “Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope.”

Dignitaries present

The event was attended by Terrance Michael Drew, who was the Special Guest of Honour, accompanied by his wife Diani Jinesha Prince-Drew.

Other dignitaries present included the First Lady Lordina Mahama, Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, and Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie.

Former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo were also in attendance.

Emphasis on integrity and discipline

President Mahama called for the strengthening of integrity in public life, stressing that independence came with obligations that citizens must uphold.

He noted that honesty should be valued in national life and public service should be treated as a responsibility entrusted to individuals for the benefit of the country.

The President also highlighted the need to restore discipline in how public resources were managed, how laws were respected, and how citizens interacted with one another.

He said patriotism should not merely be expressed through slogans but must be reflected in everyday conduct.

According to him, protecting public property, serving citizens with respect and investing in Ghana’s economic future were examples of practical patriotism.

Message to the youth

President Mahama also addressed young people, expressing confidence in their potential and encouraging them to make productive use of modern technology.

He said digital tools such as smartphones could serve as platforms for education, entrepreneurship and creative enterprise.

While acknowledging challenges faced by the youth, the President said government was investing in digital infrastructure, innovation hubs and entrepreneurship programmes across major cities including Accra, Kumasi, Tamale, Takoradi, Ho, and Koforidua.

He added that reforms in the education sector were underway, while internship and apprenticeship opportunities were being expanded to better prepare young people for employment.

However, the President emphasised that discipline, resilience and commitment would remain key ingredients for success.

“The future belongs to those who prepare for it,” he said.
