Kodjonya residents decry wastewater flow from Krobo Girls SHS

Kodjonya (E/R), March 9, – Residents of Kodjonya in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality say they are grappling with wastewater from Krobo Girls Senior High School that flows into the community daily, creating foul-smelling and unsanitary conditions.

The residents said bathroom wastewater from the school’s dormitories runs downhill into parts of the community, leaving the area flooded and disrupting their daily activities.

Mr Eugene Teye, a resident, stated that the situation had become increasingly difficult to endure.

“We are suffering because the bathroom wastewater is affecting us,” he said. “From about 0500 hours, the wastewater starts flowing through the area and it affects our daily activities.”

Another resident of Menekpo Yiti, said the challenge had persisted for a long time and called on authorities to construct a proper drainage system from the school to the main roadside gutter.

“Religiously, it is not good to be crossing people’s bath wastewater,” she said, adding that the situation had worsened sanitation conditions in the area.

When contacted, the Headmistress of Krobo Girls SHS, Madam Bernice Noel Mensah Akutteh, confirmed the situation but declined to comment further, indicating that the matter had been referred to the Municipal Chief Executive and the Municipal Education Director.

Mr Bright Yao Gbedze, the Municipal Director of the Environmental Health Unit, said the challenge was largely due to the school’s inadequate drainage system and buildings constructed close to the school wall.

He said although the school had earlier written to the Municipal Chief Executive requesting assistance, constructing a proper drainage channel to link the main gutter along the Somanya–Kpong Road would require substantial funding.

Mr Gbedze added that the school’s population of about 4,000 students meant that wastewater from the dormitories flowed continuously into the surrounding community.

Residents say the situation poses environmental and health concerns, as stagnant wastewater and the accompanying stench continue to affect daily life in the area.
