Accra, March 4, – The Government has introduced the Community Service Bill before Parliament, which received its first reading on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.
The legislation aims to allow convicts of minor offences to serve sentences through community service instead of imprisonment.
Decongestion and Rehabilitation Focus
Interior Minister Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, presenting the explanatory memorandum, said the bill would ease prison overcrowding while fostering offender rehabilitation and societal reintegration.
He noted it offers judges alternative sentencing for petty crimes, enabling positive community contributions over jail time.
The bill has been referred to Parliament’s Constitution and Legal Committee for further review and reporting.
