Ghana–China trade reaches record US$14.1 billion amid expanding cooperation

Accra, March 10,  — Trade between Ghana and China has reached a record US$14.1 billion, reflecting growing economic cooperation and a strengthening strategic partnership between the two countries.

The figure represents a year-on-year increase of more than 19.3 per cent, signalling expanding commercial engagement and deeper collaboration across multiple sectors.

Mr Li Yang, Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy of China in Ghana, said the milestone highlighted the increasing economic interdependence of the two nations.

He explained that the growth in trade volumes also reflected rising political trust and practical cooperation between Ghana and China.

Mr Li made the remarks during a Chinese New Year and Lantern Festival Gala held in Accra, which brought together members of the Chinese community, Ghanaian officials, diplomats and business leaders.

Cultural celebration and diplomatic engagement

The Lantern Festival celebration formed part of activities marking the Chinese New Year, a major cultural event that symbolises renewal and prosperity.

The programme featured cultural performances by the Anhui Performing Arts Group, which showcased traditional Chinese music, dance and artistic displays.

The Lantern Festival, which concludes the Chinese New Year festivities, traditionally represents reunion, hope and prosperity in Chinese culture.

The event also coincided with important diplomatic milestones, including the 66th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Ghana and China and the 70th anniversary of China–Africa diplomatic relations.

Expanding economic cooperation

Mr Li said cooperation between the two countries had strengthened over the past year in areas such as trade, education, industrial development and cultural exchange.

Chinese enterprises operating in Ghana, he noted, had expanded their investments by introducing new production lines and increasing activities in sectors including manufacturing, infrastructure and technology.

According to him, these investments have contributed to job creation, skills transfer and the growth of local industries, supporting Ghana’s industrialisation and broader economic development.

He also highlighted initiatives aimed at strengthening educational collaboration, including the China–Ghana Friendship Smart Classroom project, which promotes digital learning and academic exchange.

China’s broader engagement with Africa

Mr Li further outlined China’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with African countries through platforms such as the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation and initiatives linked to the Belt and Road Initiative.

He announced that 53 African countries with diplomatic relations with China would receive zero-tariff treatment on exports to China starting May 1, 2026.

The measure, he said, would increase market access for African goods and create new trade opportunities across the continent.

Ghana commends Chinese investments

Mr Ernest Brogya Genfi, who attended the event as Special Guest, commended the Chinese community for contributing to Ghana’s economic growth.

He noted that Chinese investments in sectors such as manufacturing, retail, hospitality and mining had helped create employment and strengthen economic ties between the two countries.

Mr Genfi stressed the need for continued mutual respect and adherence to Ghana’s laws to sustain the partnership.

He expressed optimism that expanding trade volumes, investment and cultural exchange would further deepen the long-standing friendship between Ghana and China.
