Food Vendor Sentenced to 20 Days for Defying KMA Fire Ban

Kumasi, March 17, – A food vendor at Alabar Market, Kande Seidu, has been sentenced to 20 days in prison for repeatedly violating Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) directives by using open flames in the market.

The sentence was delivered by District Court Two at the Prempeh Assembly Hall, with Mrs Deborah Gyawa Donkor presiding.

According to the prosecution, Kande Seidu and her sister, Fati Seidu, had ignored multiple warnings and abatement notices issued by the Environmental Health Unit of KMA to cease using open fire.

The sisters were first arraigned on January 15, 2026, for contravening Sections 27 and 29 of the KMA Public Market By-Laws (2020).

During a hearing on February 23, 2026, Kande Seidu left the courtroom before her case was called, while Fati Seidu pleaded guilty and was fined GH¢1,200 (100 penalty units).

Following Kande Seidu’s absence, the court issued a bench warrant, which led to her arrest and subsequent custodial sentence. The court emphasized that her actions showed blatant disregard for lawful authority and public safety rules.
