Fear grips Tema community after microlight crash near daycare facility

Tema, March 17, – Anxiety and distress have engulfed residents of Tema Community One Site 18 after a microlight aircraft crashed within the premises of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) Community One No. 3 Day Care Centre.

Eyewitnesses said the aircraft descended abruptly into the school compound, hit a section of the structure and caught fire while young children, all under four years, were on the premises.

The crash claimed the lives of the two persons on board the aircraft.

A visit to the area showed that the facility had been shut down temporarily, with academic work suspended as the community processes the incident.

Though investigations are ongoing to establish the cause and assess structural damage, the proximity of the crash to the children has heightened fear among residents and parents.

A parent, described the situation as deeply unsettling, saying the incident had disrupted normal life and created uncertainty among families.

She noted that many parents were hesitant to allow their children to return to school until safety assurances were provided, adding that some were even calling for traditional rites before reopening.

An eyewitness recounted that he was at a nearby park when he noticed the aircraft descending unusually. Initially assuming it intended to land, he said he quickly sensed danger and moved away.

He said the experience, including scenes from the aftermath, had left a lasting psychological impact on him.

Another resident criticised onlookers who prioritised recording videos over assisting during the emergency, urging the public to show greater responsibility in such situations.

He stressed that emergencies required immediate support for victims rather than social media attention.

The incident has sparked broader concerns about safety awareness and emergency response behaviour within communities.
