FDA alerts public on dangers of unregistered product ‘Sukudai’

Accra, March 14, – The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a cautionary advisory to the public against the use of “Sukudai,” a substance being promoted as a heart-cleansing remedy in the Kumasi Metropolis.

The Authority clarified that the product is unregistered in Ghana and is not approved for human consumption.

A statement copied to the press indicated that laboratory analysis of samples collected in Kumasi detected the presence of chloroform.

The FDA explained that chloroform is a colourless liquid with a mildly sweet scent and was historically used as an anaesthetic in surgical procedures. However, it is no longer employed in medicine due to its toxic effects and association with serious health risks, including cancer.

The Authority warned that ingesting or inhaling chloroform could lead to severe complications such as drowsiness, sedation, respiratory difficulties, liver and kidney damage, unconsciousness, cancer, and even death.

The warning follows a viral social media video suggesting that “Sukudai” could corrode Styrofoam plates.

The FDA is working with stakeholders, including the Ghana Police Service and National Security, to educate the public on the dangers of using the substance and to track, apprehend, and prosecute individuals involved in its production, distribution, or sale.

Consumers are urged to report unregistered products, including “Sukudai,” via the FDA website at www.fdaghana.gov.gh
, official social media handles, or hotline numbers. The Authority reiterated its commitment to protecting public health and encouraged the use of only registered and FDA-approved products.
