Adawso (E/R), March 4, — Relatives of Gloria Awatey, a 29-year-old woman who died under circumstances suspected to involve poisoning at Adawso in the Eastern Region, are calling for greater openness in the investigation into her death.
The family says it has not yet received official communication on the outcome of an autopsy conducted on the deceased, a situation they believe raises questions about the handling of the case.
Reverend Michael Afedi Dadebo, family head of the deceased and former District Minister of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana at Dodowa, said that the relatives were unhappy that the results of the post-mortem examination had not been formally shared with them.
According to him, although the family covered the cost of the examination, the police selected the pathologist who conducted the procedure.
“We paid for the autopsy, yet the police appointed the doctor who carried it out, and we have still not been officially informed about the results,” he said.
Rev. Dadebo further alleged that when family members attended proceedings at the High Court in Koforidua after being directed by the police, they were prevented from entering the courtroom while some relatives of the suspect were allowed access.
“They called certain individuals into the courtroom. The suspect’s relatives were admitted, but we were left outside until the hearing had ended,” he claimed.
The family head said the situation had heightened fears that aspects of the case might be mishandled, and he appealed to authorities, including the Ministry of the Interior and the Inspector-General of Police, to ensure transparency and fairness in the process.
When contacted, Police Inspector George Oppong Boakye, Akropong District Police Commander, confirmed that the matter was currently before the court and declined to comment further.
Meanwhile, Ernest Klonu, the deceased’s husband and the main suspect in the case, has obtained legal counsel and is pursuing bail.
Police reports indicate that on January 9, 2026, at about 2330 hours, Awatey — a mother of three living at Dodowa Salem — died after an incident being investigated as a suspected poisoning at her residence in Adawso.
Family members said the deceased had previously experienced marital difficulties and had left the matrimonial home to stay elsewhere.
Investigators gathered information suggesting that the suspect allegedly entered the woman’s room at night, poured a drink into a cup, added an unidentified substance and forced the liquid into her mouth before leaving.
She was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Her remains have been deposited at the Apau Mortuary near Koforidua as investigations continue.
