Black Queens face delayed WAFCON campaign after CAF reschedules tournament

Accra, March 5, – The Ghana women's national football team will have to wait longer for their next appearance at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) following a decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to reschedule the 2026 tournament.

The competition, initially scheduled to run from March 17 to April 3, 2026, will now take place from July 25 to August 16, 2026.

CAF explained in a statement that the championship, awarded to Morocco in October 2024, had to be postponed due to unforeseen circumstances after consultations with partners and stakeholders, including FIFA.

“After discussions between CAF and its partners, FIFA and other stakeholders, CAF decided to reschedule the dates of the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON 2026 to 25 July – 16 August 2026 to ensure the success of this important women’s competition in light of certain unforeseen circumstances,” the statement said.

CAF added that preparations for the continental showpiece were ongoing and expressed confidence that the tournament would be successfully staged.

The revised schedule means participating national teams, including Ghana, will need to adjust their training programmes and logistical arrangements ahead of the competition.

The Black Queens have been training in the United Arab Emirates as part of preparations for the tournament but will now have to recalibrate their build-up as they aim to improve on their bronze medal finish at the previous edition.
