Baba Jamal Retains Ayawaso East Seat for NDC

Accra, March 3, 2026  – Alhaji Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has won the Ayawaso East parliamentary bye-election, keeping the seat in the party’s column.

Official results released by the Electoral Commission of Ghana showed that Baba Jamal polled 10,884 votes.

His closest contender, Baba Ali Yussif of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), secured 4,009 votes. Ibrahim Iddrisu of the Liberal Party of Ghana obtained 43 votes.

Two independent candidates, Umar Sanda Mohammed and David Akonor, garnered 1,885 and 107 votes respectively.

Out of 17,048 ballots cast, 16,928 were valid, with 120 rejected ballots. The constituency has 49,966 registered voters.

The bye-election was organised to fill the vacancy created by the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Naser Toure Mahama, in January 2026.

The poll was generally peaceful, with security personnel deployed early to centres across Nima, Maamobi, Accra New Town and surrounding communities. Police officers mounted static posts while patrol teams monitored activities throughout the day.

Following the declaration at the collation centre, supporters of Baba Jamal celebrated his return to Parliament.

In remarks to journalists, he dedicated the victory to his mother and thanked constituents and party members for their confidence in him.

“The resetting of Ayawaso East starts now,” he said, pledging to champion development in the constituency.

Earlier, Baba Ali Yussif conceded defeat, saying his party would accept the outcome in good faith, though he described the turnout as low and expressed optimism about future contests.

Born on May 7, 1969, at Akwatia in the Eastern Region, Baba Jamal is a lawyer and was called to the Ghana Bar in 2015 after studying at the University of Ghana.

He previously served as Member of Parliament for Akwatia from 2013 to 2017 and held a deputy ministerial position during the first term of President John Dramani Mahama.

In 2025, he was appointed Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria but was later recalled over allegations of voter inducement during party primaries—claims that were subsequently dismissed.

His victory marks a return to Parliament after nine years and sustains the NDC’s electoral dominance in Ayawaso East since 1992.
