Accra, March 4, – Mr Baba Jamal Ahmed, the newly elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso East, has pledged to reposition the constituency for accelerated development following his victory in Tuesday’s by-election.
He said his election signalled the beginning of a new phase aimed at transforming the image of the constituency, particularly Nima, by promoting peace, professionalism and progress.
Mr Jamal made the remarks after the Returning Officer, Mr Samuel Anim-Ofori, officially declared him winner of the poll.
He secured 10,884 votes out of the valid ballots cast.
Mr Yusuf Ali Baba obtained 4,009 votes, while Mr Muhammad Umar Sander of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) polled 1,885 votes. Mr Akonor David, an independent candidate, received 104 votes.
Mr Jamal said the outcome of the election reflected the constituency’s readiness to embrace a new direction and pledged to work in Parliament to ensure that Ayawaso East benefited from national development initiatives.
He commended residents and the media for contributing to the peaceful conduct of both the party primaries and the by-election.
According to him, the calm atmosphere during the polls demonstrated that the narrative about Nima and Ayawaso East was changing.
“The peaceful nature of the exercise shows that the people of Nima and Ayawaso East are committed to peace and order,” he said.
Mr Jamal dedicated the victory to his 93-year-old mother, Mimi, whose encouragement and support he described as instrumental to his political journey.
He also expressed appreciation to his wife, children, as well as the national and regional leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for their support throughout the campaign.
Mr Jamal further acknowledged the President for the opportunity to recently serve in Nigeria, noting that the experience gained would enhance his work in Parliament.
He called for collaboration between the media, community leaders and grassroots supporters to help realise the vision of resetting the constituency.
The MP-elect assured traders, street vendors and residents that he would prioritise their welfare while working to advance the overall development of Ayawaso East.
