Accra, Feb 27, - President John Dramani Mahama says Government is set to implement its 24-hour economy initiative following the passage of the 24-Hour Economy Authority Bill, 2025, into law.
“Last week at the Cabinet meeting held, I had the honour of signing this historic legislation into law. All is now set for take-off,” he said when he delivered the Message on the State of the Nation to Parliament on Friday, February 27.
President Mahama announced that GHS110 million had been committed in the 2026 Budget for the implementation of the initiative, describing the programme as “the boldest economic transformation initiative in Ghana’s recent history.”
Launched in July 2025, the initiative seeks to transform Ghana into a self-sufficient, export-led economy by promoting continuous productivity and job creation across key sectors.
“We’ve moved decisively from planning to action on our flagship 24-hour economy and accelerated export development programme,” he stated.
President Mahama said resources had been made available to enable businesses to operate beyond traditional hours and attract investment through strategic partnerships with the Development Bank Ghana and the Ghana Investment Infrastructure Fund.
He said the partnerships would strengthen the foundation for sustained growth and create jobs, particularly for the youth, adding: “this is about building prosperity and restoring our people’s hope through concrete action.”
President Mahama said the initiative was designed to unlock round-the-clock economic activities, deepen value chains, boost productivity and exports, and create quality jobs in agriculture, manufacturing, logistics and services.
He said Government had proposed duty- and tax-free importation of equipment for expansion or retooling of factories registered under the initiative.
“The incentives are coming. Your belief in Ghana will be rewarded with policies that encourage even greater investment,” he said at a sod-cutting ceremony for a new float glass manufacturing facility at Shama in the Western Region on Wednesday, February 25.
Other incentives include tax rebates on electricity consumed during off-peak hours, enhanced security for night-shift workers and measures to reduce the cost of doing business.
The initiative is expected to generate about 1.7 million jobs and reduce reliance on imports.
President Mahama urged private sector collaboration and called on Ghanaian and international investors to take advantage of the programme.
