Accra, Feb. 17, 2026 – The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has pledged its support for the government’s proposed sports fund policy during a high-level meeting with the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, in Accra.
The engagement, described by SWAG as a strategic dialogue, marked the Association’s first formal interaction with the Minister since he assumed office. Leading the delegation was SWAG President, Kwabena Yeboah, who underscored the need for closer cooperation between policymakers and the media to reposition Ghana’s sports industry.
Mr. Yeboah acknowledged the Minister’s proactive engagement with stakeholders, noting that his early outreach to sports journalists demonstrated a commitment to inclusivity and partnership.
He said SWAG was particularly encouraged by the Ministry’s facilitation of Ghana’s participation in the recent AIPS Congress in The Gambia, which he described as a significant boost to the country’s visibility within the global sports media fraternity.
According to him, international representation of that nature reinforces the economic potential of sports and strengthens Ghana’s standing in continental and global sporting discourse.
Touching on policy, the SWAG President reiterated the Association’s backing of the proposed sports fund and called for sustained public awareness efforts to ensure its success. He stressed that enhanced funding mechanisms were vital to revitalising grassroots sports and building a competitive pipeline of local talent.
In response, Mr. Adams commended SWAG for its longstanding role in promoting and scrutinising sports development in Ghana. He emphasised that responsible and constructive journalism remained central to policy improvement and sectoral growth.
The Minister indicated his readiness to work with the Association to design targeted training initiatives aimed at building the professional capacity of sports journalists nationwide.
He further encouraged intensified promotion of sports activities and policies to attract private sector investment and unlock opportunities for emerging athletes.
Members of the SWAG delegation included Vice President Evelyn Nsiah Asare, General Secretary Charles Osei Asibey, Deputy General Secretary Kenneth Odeng Adade, Treasurer Owuraku Nsiah, as well as Franklin Anane Gyimah, Tilda Elinam Acorlor and Francis Ofori.
