Suspected Cop Killer Rearrested in Bolgatanga

Accra, Feb. 17, – Police have re-arrested Abdul-Aziz Iddrisu, popularly known as Baaluuse, in connection with the killing of General Constable Seth Oppong-Damoah.

According to a police statement issued on Tuesday, the 33-year-old suspect was picked up at about 1230 hours during a coordinated intelligence operation led by the National Police Intelligence Directorate (NPID) in Accra, working together with officers in the Upper East Region.

The operation led to his arrest at Polego, a community within Bolgatanga, where he had reportedly been hiding.

Police indicated that Abdul-Aziz and other suspects, who are still being sought, had been declared wanted for allegedly ambushing officers stationed at the Kariminga Police Barrier late last year.

During that attack, General Constable Seth Oppong-Damoah was fatally shot. Two other officers — General Corporals Nyanku Charles and Abu Moro — also suffered fatal injuries.

Investigators have linked the suspect to one of the rival factions involved in the long-running Bawku conflict, identifying him as a combatant aligned with a feuding group.

A search of three mobile phones retrieved from him allegedly uncovered evidence suggesting his involvement, alongside others still at large, in the protracted conflict, including participation in multiple killings.

Preliminary forensic analysis of the devices reportedly showed that Abdul-Aziz was a member of a WhatsApp platform named “Trusted Friends,” which featured the image of Alhaji Seidu Abagri, known as a rival chief in the Bawku chieftaincy dispute, as its display picture. The group is said to have largely comprised individuals from the Mamprusi and Moshie communities.

Police further disclosed that video footage recovered from the suspect allegedly showed him displaying several AK-47 rifles packed in a sack as well as pistols at a location believed to be Bawku.

In an audio recording, he was also purportedly heard soliciting additional weapons and ammunition to strengthen the Mamprusi side in the ongoing conflict against the Kusaasi faction.

Authorities additionally suspect Abdul-Aziz and another individual identified only as Mark, who remains at large, of facilitating the movement of arms and ammunition into Bawku.

The police statement noted that the December 29, 2025 attack on officers at the Kariminga Barrier was allegedly premeditated and executed by the suspect together with his accomplices.

After the incident, Abdul-Aziz reportedly went into hiding but was eventually tracked down and apprehended.

Police say efforts are ongoing to arrest the remaining suspects and to advance investigations into the matter.
