NPC Condemns Rising Violence in Senior High Schools

Accra, Feb. 25 – The National Peace Council Ghana (NPC) has expressed grave concern over increasing incidents of violence in Senior High Schools (SHSs), describing the trend as disturbing and a serious threat to safety within educational institutions.

In a statement issued in Accra, the Council referenced six reported assault cases involving students across various schools. Among them was an incident in which a student of Obrachire Senior High School was hospitalised after being attacked during a district athletics competition.

The NPC also condemned the alleged gang rape of a female student of Osino Presbyterian Senior High School and the stabbing of a final-year student of Koforidua Senior High Technical School (SECTECH). Both incidents occurred separately during the Super Zonal Sports Festival held in Koforidua in the Eastern Region.

Additionally, the Council denounced the assault on teachers of West Africa Senior High School by students of Frafraha Community Senior High School, as well as the attack on a final-year student of Adisadel College by six students of Aggrey Memorial A.M.E. Zion Senior High School during an inter-colleges sports festival in Cape Coast.

While noting that the Ghana Education Service (GES) had already condemned the incidents and promised disciplinary action, the NPC said it was reinforcing the directive by the Ministry of Education for expedited investigations.

The Council called for heightened security measures in schools and at sporting events and emphasised the need to strengthen counselling and guidance services to tackle indiscipline, aggression, and intolerance among students.

It further appealed to parents and guardians to take greater responsibility for the moral upbringing of their children by promoting discipline, tolerance, and respect for diversity.

The NPC reiterated its commitment to expanding sensitisation programmes on peacebuilding and non-violent conflict resolution and urged the GES and relevant stakeholders to reinforce disciplinary frameworks to ensure that schools remain safe environments conducive to learning.
