Illegal mining devastates Ghana forests: 8,923.8 hectares lost by 2024

Accra, Feb. 25, – Illegal mining in Ghana’s forest reserves ballooned from 5,252.9 hectares in 2021 to 8,923.8 hectares by December 31, 2024, a Forestry Commission survey shows.

Ashanti Region suffered most at 4,948.9 hectares, followed by Western North’s 2,195.7 hectares. Savanna (29.5 hectares) and Central (44.7 hectares) saw the least damage.

Hardest-hit reserves include Oda River and Apamprama in Ashanti, plus Upper Wassaw in Western North.

Dr. Ben Torgbor, Operations Manager of the Plantations Department (Forest Services Division), presented the findings Tuesday. The team used ground surveys, drone mapping, expert judgment, satellite remote sensing, and cost-effective Google Earth Pro historical imagery for broad, rapid coverage.

The Commission plans an AI-driven system for automatic detection and quantification of mining damage, Dr. Torgbor said. “This will fuel advocacy, shape policy, and deliver frequent updates.”

An ongoing 2025 survey will publish in June 2026.
