Gunmen kill two at Keri amid renewed tensions

Kadjebi (O/R), Feb. 23, – A late-night shooting at Keri in the Nkwanta South Municipality has left two men dead, heightening anxiety in an area already grappling with a longstanding dispute over the ownership of Nkwanta township.

The victims, identified as Asunke Joseph and Anasechor Bob, were reportedly attacked on Sunday evening. Community members say the incident has deepened fear among residents, with some fleeing their homes over concerns of possible reprisal violence.

Information available indicates that Asunke had moved to Dambai in the Krachi East Municipality in recent months due to tensions in Keri. He is said to have returned to harvest yams when the fatal incident occurred.

Madam Juliana Awasan, Assemblywoman for the Keri North Electoral Area, confirmed the deaths but declined to comment further.

The conflict over Nkwanta township, involving three ethnic groups, has for years generated intermittent clashes, resulting in casualties and destruction of property.

A resident who requested anonymity lamented that the shooting came shortly after factions within the municipality had taken part in a peace walk aimed at promoting harmony.

Security authorities have acknowledged the incident and commenced investigations to track down the perpetrators.

The Oti Regional Police Command has called for calm and urged residents to volunteer information that could aid investigations, assuring the public that the situation, though tense, remains under control.
